i read on wiki, that there is a simple way to make a multi-stage coil gun, which is far more powerful. just make many coils on a long barrel, out of the same wire > its basically one very long coil, spaced out and divided along the barrel. is this true? also, im planning on making a coil gun with 10 - 20 camera capacitors, that i can geet for free by asking for used disposable cameras at film shops. ive also been told by my teacher, that you could input the power from the capacitors directly back into the cap bank by using a rectifier... also true? thnx

Use a slightly smaller pen-case(if neccesary) and copperhead BB-bullets, and you'll bust that can in no time

What kind off capasitors have you used?
Cause the disposable cameras are kinda hard to get, or quite expensive, for a school project.

Also a couple more things, test where on the pen tube the wire turns should be placed. I suggest moving them closer to the projectile or spreading them the length of the tube with as many turns as possible. You should also put a diode on the wire right before it wraps around the pen to keep the current from running backwards back into the capacitors.

Hey metiz, thanks for the comment. Theoretically there should be no limit to the amount of capacitors, the more the longer the charging time though. You would have to optimize everything in the coil gun to work with that many capacitors to get the most out of it.

great stuff. I have one of those only much smaller with 5 capacitors. Is there an upper limit with using capacitors (read, if you'd want to, could you hook up 50 of those things)?

Why did you take apart cameras instead of just buying capacitors? a quick google search shows many places to buy from.
Also (trying to remember PHYS 232) but don't more coils = better output. wouldn't it be simple to just wrap the wire around it many many more times?

You coil gun has only one stage. You'll get a much greater muzzle velocity using each of your capacitors to drive a separate coil in sequence and spacing them out down the barrel. There's enough energy in that cap bank to rival a small handgun if you use it right!

Forget using a car distributor (not fast enough) a simple circuit with a few 556's and some scr's could be made for under $10. Put some pots on the 556 stages and you can tweak firring times with simple dials to get the most speed.

Ever consider making a bigger version? I would but I don't have the guts to. That spark scared the #%@& out of me! You are lucky, I hope you had a fire extinguisher nearby! And shouldn't you be wearing large, thick rubber gloves?

Know any other ways those fancy camera caps would come in handy? Some less dangerous but equally satisfying ways?

If you used a narrower barrel, you could easily use Air Gun Pellets.
